Planet Live is an innovative project that visualizes the constitution of the earth and tracks environmental changes in real time. A spherical projection surface shows data such as pollution in different places on earth, as well as armed conflicts worldwide. It takes up the idea of Buckminster Fuller’s “World Game,” who believed that people would treat their planet better if they saw the consequences of their actions.
The visualization of the real-time databases showing migration rates, storms, wildfires, earthquakes and the state of the world’s oceans is particularly impressive. In addition, it is possible to follow global flight and ship movements in real time. Visitors can operate the surface of the globe using touch panels and thus receive detailed insights.
The project was created in cooperation between André Heller, the company ESRI from California and the Austrian Institute for Sustainability and was developed and realized by Bildwerk and Media Apparat. Planet Live was set up at the Taggenbrunn Castle in St. Veit as part of the “Time Spaces” exhibition and is open for visitors. The project was also exhibited at the Austrian World Summit 2022. At the Bea World Awards, the World State Machine 2022 received 3rd place in the category “Use of Technology”.
